On August 30, 2021, Macadamia Solar, LLC (Madacamia) filed a request to build a merchant plant solar energy facility with a capacity of up to 484 megawatts (MW) to be located on about 4,813 fenced acres of privately owned land located generally on and around Highway 32 and Highway 99 outside of Plymouth in Washington County. Macadamia proposes to begin construction in the fourth quarter of 2023 and begin operating the facility in the fourth quarter of 2025. The expected life of the facility is 35 years. Maps showing the location of the proposed facility can be found here.

On September 13, 2021, Macadamia filed a request to build a 6.5-mile, 230-kV transmission line that would connect the solar energy facility to the existing Trowbridge Substation owned by Dominion Energy North Carolina. Macadamia stated that the corridor for the transmission line will be 100 feet wide, and it will be sited via easement agreements and/or purchase options that the Company is currently obtaining from landowners. Maps of the proposed route showing the likely locations of the transmission towers are available here, here and here. The transmission structures will be about 90 to 145 feet tall and spaced from 250 to 900 feet apart.

The Commission has consolidated Macadamia’s two requests, the solar energy facility and the power line, and will consider them jointly.

The Commission scheduled a public witness hearing for November 2, 2021, but subsequently cancelled this hearing because the Commission did not receive any protests from the public about the proposed facilities. The public can file statements with the Commission via email or by mailing comments to the address below. Such written statements will become part of the official record in the proceeding and after two or three business days can be viewed on this website via the docket number.

The Public Staff – North Carolina Utilities Commission is a separate agency that investigates utility matters and represents the using and consuming public in proceedings before the Commission including this one. You can send them a statement or a question by email.

The Commission has scheduled an expert witness hearing for September 6, 2022, starting at 1:00 p.m., in Commission hearing room 2115, Dobbs Building, 430 N Salisbury, Raleigh.
